The Sacrament of Annointing
"May the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way..."
2 Thessalonians 3:16
The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick imparts spiritual and even physical strength during times of illness. Like all sacraments, holy anointing was instituted by Jesus Christ during his earthly ministry. It consists essentially in the anointing of the forehead and hands and has as its effects:
- the uniting of the sick person to the passion of Christ, for his own good and that of the whole Church;
- the strengthening, peace, and courage to endure in a Christ-like way the sufferings of illness or old age;
- the forgiveness of sins;
- the restoration of health, if it is conducive to the salvation of the soul;
- the preparation for passing over to eternal life.
The Anointing of the Sick gives us the strength of the Holy Spirit to resist anxiety, discouragement, and temptation. It enables the grace of peace and fortitude to rest upon us during an otherwise challenging time.
